35 Years of Having Fun with Rocks

Our 35th annual Rock and Gem Show and Sale titled, From Then To Now - 35 Years of Having Fun with Rocks, took place on October 26th and 27th 2013 from 10am to 5pm both days at Kyle Centre in Port Moody.

This was a retrospective show, recognizing both the club's 35 years in Port Moody and the City of Port Moody's centennial. Our team opened up the club archives and went through old minutes, rediscovering names and events that shaped our club into what it is today. Using both the information we uncovered and some fresh ideas, we offered the following:

  • Artist Cosimo Geracitano and the Jade Book of Hope. Cosimo, a Coquitlam, BC resident, was part of our 2004 show and was so well received we invited him to return for our retrospective show. He displayed the Jade Book once again in addition to a collection of his tools.

  • Freedom of the City recipient David Driscoll and the basswood. During the 1980s and early 1990s Port Moody Mayor David Driscoll officially opened our annual show. In 1988 our club gave Mayor Driscoll a block of basswood as a token of our appreciation. Mr. Driscoll is a talented wood carver - he designed the coat-of-arms above the entrance to the Inlet Theatre. We asked him what became of this wood from 1988 and he said he still had it in storage. We invited him to carve something from it for display in our special show this year and he agreed. The end result was a wood sculpture titled, "Hands".

  • The Centennial Stone. This 100 facet gemstone was cut by club member Geoff Cameron. The stone was on display next to a club timeline of key events and was later gifted to the City.

  • Port Moodite. Our central display was a selection of rocks collected in Port Moody which we coined Port Moodite. Many of the Port Moodite specimens were cut into cabochons and set into jewellery. The Port Moody Station Museum contributed a few rock oddities for this case, including a cannonball found in the 1930s off Ioco Road. The cannonball was used for target practice by the Royal Engineers in the 19th century and later discovered by a Port Moody resident in their garden.

  • Erica Williams. We invited Erica Williams, who discovered fossils in the Port Moody area in the 1970s, to display her finds and interact with our guests.

  • Special presentations. Honourary membership was bestowed to three additional individuals and existing honourary members were recognized through both certificates and showcase dedications.

  • And finally, as the show was officially recognized by the City of Port Moody as a Centennial Event, we were pleased to have a visit from Port Moody's namesake, Colonel Richard Moody (played by David Spence). A number of club members joined Colonel Moody and dressed circa 1913 in celebration of the centennial.
